How to Prepare for Your First Workplace Safety Audit

Blog

Running a business with physical premises usually requires safety audits. When it comes to your first one, it's normal for an inspector to make recommendations for improvement. However, you need to demonstrate that you're doing everything you can to create a safe environment. Here are some areas to address ahead of your first audit.

First Aid Kits

Do you have a first aid kit? And does everyone know where it is? When adding a first aid kit to your workplace, ensure it includes the right items. Such items can vary between industries and states. The main point is, you shouldn't assume that an everyday kit you can buy at a local store is enough. If you're running a high-risk workplace, you're likely to need a more advanced kit than an everyday office. Additionally, you may need a first aid room. Always assess your requirements ahead of your audit.

Fire Escapes and Doors

Every workplace is at risk of a fire. Although some carry more risks than others, events outside your control can result in serious incidents. For example, faulty wiring you weren't aware of, employee carelessness, and wildfires can all be devastating to your workplace. To mitigate such risks, you need clear fire escapes, a fire assembly point, and fire doors that function. If you're occupying a premises as a new tenant, don't assume that the previous occupant kept everything in order. Ensure your fire escapes are signed and easy to access. Additionally, ask someone to check your fire doors for signs of damage or decay that could render them useless.

Clear Signage

Signage requirements vary between businesses. At a minimum, you'll need a fire sign that indicates where exits are and what to do in an emergency. It's also advisable to create a sign that features emergency contact numbers so your employees can call them rather than depending on a manager. If hazards are present, such as electrical access boxes, they need warning signs. Additionally, if there are rooms that only certain people can enter for safety purposes, ensure they're well-signed, too. It's sometimes hard to determine what signs you need. Your workplace safety inspection report should point you in the right direction.

Appointed Persons

All workplaces need appointed persons for certain functions. For example, you'll likely need someone who is trained in first aid administration. And you should make it clear who your fire officers are. While these people won't take on high levels of responsibility in their roles, they're necessary so that employees can gain clarity in an emergency. Ensure the names of appointed persons are clear in employee handbooks, on Intranet pages, and on signs.

Growing Village - A Simple Guide To Real Estate

Hello there. I have spent my whole life in the same house. I inherited it from my parents, and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. When I was a child, my parents referred to our town as a "seaside village". My how things have changed! These days, I live in centre of a major city with resorts and highrises all around. Seeing the transformation has been absolutely fascinating. As I've watched the value of houses around me skyrocket, I've developed a voyeur's interest in the real estate market. I love nothing more than browsing in a real estate agent's window, attending an open house or watching an auction. I know that this is a hobby for quite a few people as some of my neighbours join me on my "excursions". I hope that others with an interest in real estate will enjoy the casual observations recorded in this blog.
